Project Description

Glencoe Marathon Gathering

The full 26.2 mile off-road route snakes through the pass of Glencoe, surrounded by the towering remains of this ancient super volcano, before climbing 240 metres up the fearsome Devil’s Staircase. From the eastern edge of the Aonach Eagach Ridge you look straight onto the mighty Buachaille Etive Mor (the great herdsman) before dropping back to sea level at Kinlochleven. Climbing up through the Mamores the route undulates until the descent into Glen Nevis and the base of the mighty Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak. The route climbs a total of 1348 metres.

As part of the Glencoe Marathon Gathering there is also a Half Marathon available so that more runners can enjoy this most spectacular part of Scotland. The Mamores Half Marathon starts at Kinlochleven and follows the West Highland Way to the finish in Glen Nevis. Why not start with this one and build up to the full Glencoe Marathon next year!

The 2020 event will take place on Sunday 6th September. For more information please visit the Glencoe Marathon website.

My first ever marathon and it was absolutely brutal!!! Not for the faint hearted…..the wee hills at the end just about finished me off….BUT, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world! Organisation, scenery (and weather!) first class, well stocked water / food stations, cheery marshalls, great start to the sound of bagpipes on a frosty morning, love the medal….could go on, I cried when I crossed the finish line (wuss!) and I’m not sure I could do it again but what an experience. The other runners were awesome as well and many a friendly hand guided me towards the finish line. Am still on a high two days later, anyone thinking about it just sign up, you won’t regret it!!

Very well done! I came all the way from germany to do this as my first ever marathon and it was brilliant. Everything was so well organized, water, food, safety and most of all such great support!!! I have never ever heard so much “well done” “keep going” “you are doing great” along any other route! This means a lot! Thank you so much for this experience!

A great event! My first marathon, a beautiful course and everything was very well organised. The marshals were fantastic and cheery even for those of us at the tail end of the race and there was still a great atmosphere at the finish line. Great race goodies and unique medal. Only minor comment to make regarding race photos – not everyone was pictured; if possible it may be worth having a static photographer…however, friendly marshals were more than happy to help take a quick snap en route

A beautiful and demanding course that can be enjoyed because of the fantastic organisation surrounding this event. From registration, through the clockwork race transport, to the final metres, I felt very well supported and taken care of. Even though I was among the back of the pack, the cheers and encouragement throughout, and at the finish, never lacked genuine enthusiasm. Great medal and t-shirt, I was proud to have earned. The greater the challenge, the greater the satisfaction. Go for it! And I have to make a final comment about the final stop at mile 20 – what a spread!
